Rick Astley is dead, or is he?

Posted in Music by weng Tuesday June 30, 2009

Nope, it’s a prank and it fooled the best of us.
I only posted anything about it after I got an alert about it via SMS services from The Star. C’mon people, no proof reading, no fact checking?

Check out the link to the Google index page. Obviously the page has been removed.
The Star jumps the gun

CNN getting fooled as well?

Reminescent of rick-roll? Yep, as always Rick is alive and rolling :)

Kanye West - Street Lights

Posted in Music, Reco by weng Tuesday June 30, 2009

Kanye is an arrogant, cocky and a dickhead. But, he does have talent. No doubt about that, which is why most people let his attitude slide. Occasionally, some of his songs really shine through that extra mile. His collaboration with Jamie Foxx was superb, American Boy was great but I haven’t felt this way about a Kanye track. I first heard this track during episode 10 of Grey’s Anatomy Season 5 during the tenth episode. Karev’s solo surgery and Hunt/Yang’s air vent scene AND of course Lil Grey and Sloan’s education lesson.

Such a harmonic and melodic composition. Class.

Freaking ironic

I just realised I was talking about death and Jeff Buckley a day before the reported deaths of Michael Jackson, Farrah Fawcett.

Ironic. RIP.

Michael Jackson, the King of Pop is dead

Posted in Music by weng Friday June 26, 2009

The little angelic voice that came out of The Jackson 5, belting out such classic motown tunes as Big Boy, ABC and I’ll Be There, to the guy who led The Jacksons, then went solo and brought you Thriller, Beat It, Billie Jean, Bad, Man In The Mirror, Smooth Criminal, Black Or White, Do You Remember The Time, etc…

Despite all the negative implications that he suffered throughout his life such as child abuse, never ending plastic surgery, skin bleeching (which I always thought Black or White was ironic), alleged sexual abuse on two young kids, losing the plot, going bankrupt, bad parenthood, etc, it doesn’t deny the fact that he was a musical genious. Although I have never been the biggest fan of his music, but his influences and legacy will remain in everybody’s hearts and minds forever.

RIP: Michael Jackson (August 29 1958 - June 25 2009). He was just short of turning 51.

Jeff Buckley and the infinite sadness

Posted in Movies, Music, Reco by weng Thursday June 25, 2009

Jeff Buckley, as you may know is a member of a the DB30 clan. Dead Before 30. Some of you may remember him as a tremendous talent who was able to cover songs and inflict that tragic, emo and eclectic sound to the song. Jeff who left the world in 1997 had previously released a debut album Grace and a follow-up (Sketches For my Sweetheart the Drunk), which was released after his death in 1998.

His most memorable number is none other than a remake of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah (which recently appeared on The Watchmen’s OST). The Jeff Buckley version has been covered succesfully by the likes of Damien Rice and of course in pop culture via Jason Castro on American Idol a few seasons ago. Anytime one of these covers climbs the charts, Jeff’s version re-enters the charts, mainly as a fan tribute to the cult legend.

Wanna relive Jeff Buckley moments? Catch the film My Sister’s Keeper starring Abigail Breslin and Cameron Diaz. It’s a bawl-fest but it features Jeff Buckley’s cover of Elton John’s We All Fall In Love Sometimes. Eclectic magic.

Aimee Mann live in Singapore, Esplanade Concert Hall, Singapore, 29 August 2009

Posted in Gigs, Music, Reco by weng Thursday June 18, 2009

Aimee is coming to town. Well not exactly. She’s coming to Singapore. The veteren pop-rocker first entered my airwaves back in 1995 in the days where piracy wasn’t so rampant and mp3s were a novelty. The series’ that we have been watching on terrestial TV was Beverly Hills and supposedly Melrose Place (which got banned after a few episodes). Luckily we had the OSTs to live on. On the wicked crazy Melrose Place OST, there were a number of tracks, which I remembered such as Urge Overkill, Paul Westerberg, Dinosaur Jr, Frente!, The Divinyls (With such a sexy track), Letters to Cleo and so many more. But one track, which I remember till today and still have the song is That’s Just What You Are by Aimee Mann. Such a simple, pop tune that just stays retched in my memory. This track is also off Aimee’s second album I’m With Stupid released in 1995.

Later on, I get acquainted with her debut album Whatever where I heard Stupid Thing and I’m hooked. Then came Red Vines (remember that animated video), You Do and of course Save Me - all off Aimee’s 2000 release Bachelor No. 2. Save Me also featured on 1999’s Magnolia soundtrack and got Aimee a Grammy.

Aimee’s follow up album Lost in Space in 2002 only had a couple of songs I really loved, Pavlov’s Bell and This Is How It Goes. Then came Beautiful and I Can’t Help You Anymore from The Forgotten Arm released in 2005.

I must admit I haven’t quite absorbed her 2008 album @#%&*! Smilers.

I’m hoping I can make it for a concert. Plenty of time to plan.

Date: Saturday, 29 Aug 2009
Venue: Esplanade Concert Hall, Singapore
Tickets: S$118, S$98 and S$68 (excluding SISTIC fee)
