Gig Alert: Erykah Badu, Skye and Korn to perform in Sunburst KL

Posted in Gigs, Music by weng Wednesday February 25, 2009

So Pineapple have somehow redeemed themselves. It’s confirmed that Erykah Badu, Skye (Morcheeba) and Korn are also to headline Sunburst together with NERD.

I forgive you for the Coldplay debacle.

Buzz Artiste: Yael Naim

Let’s go for similar artistes. Everyone knows Regina Spektor and her unique style, as well as Feist. Yael Naim and Lenka (see previous post) have somewhat similar elements in their music. Yael was recommended by one of my buddies and well, she’s pretty awesome. She feels like a fresher Regina Spektor.

I’m in the midst of listening to more of her stuff but I really like what I’ve heard. Check out her take on Britney’s Toxic on Youtube. I never thought I would like the song. Kinda reminiscent of Marie DeSalle’s (Lisa Bonet) take on Peter Frampton’s (or Big Mountain for you who don’t know Peter Frampton) Baby I Love Your Way.

Buzz Artiste: Lenka

Getting back into the things that are important instead of harping over lousy management companies and events (oops there I go again), sorry. Good music.

I’ve been wanting to write about Lenka (Lenka Kripac), a half australian, half czech ex TV host, who was one part of Decoder Ring and now plying her trade as a solo singer songwriter. I first heard her music on Grey’s Anatomy, season 5. I think it was episode 5, where Izzy and Karev start their whole topsy turvy relationship again and where Derek gives meredith a kidney. The track is called Live Like You’re Dying. Good title, good lyrics. Very appropriate song for the scene transitions.

The Show is another catchy pop tune, which incidently I heard on Malaysian radio. Now, I can’t remember which station though.

Coldplay @ Sunburst, Bukit Kiara, Kuala Lumpur - Not happening.

Rumours and more rumours. Pineapple gives us so much to think about. So now, media leaks have begun to trickle out on to music lovers’ radars. Coldplay has apparently confirmed that they are coming, which now makes the March weekend an awesome music fueled one. Coldplay, NERD and then Duffy.

I’ll continue waiting eagerly on the rumour mill.
So they have confirmed their Singapore 23 March gig.

Update: Coldplay have confirmed Abu Dhabi and Hong Kong as well. Still no word on Malaysia.

Update: I think it’s pretty much confirmed. Coldplay are not coming. I might catch them in Singapore.

Grammy Performances

Posted in Music by weng Monday February 9, 2009

Inspite of all the hoo-haa from Chris Brown and Rihanna’s altercation, the Grammy’s had some pretty interesting collaborations.

Among the noteworthy were, Sir Paul McCartney and the return of the headbanger drummer in Dave Grohl, the rap heavyweights of Jay Z, Kanye, Lil Wayne and TI together with Mercury Award and now Grammy Award winner, M.I.A. (all 9 months and due date of her).

Adele, M.I.A. and Sugarland were pretty good as well.

Rihanna and Chris Brown altercation

Posted in Music by weng Monday February 9, 2009

So whilst most people are wondering whether was it really Rihanna allegedly getting assaulted by Chris Brown and whether is she okay, I’m pretty sure concert organisers and main sponsor Celcom are wondering is she going to cancel her gig in Bukit Jalil, KL?

4 days (and counting) away from her Malaysian gig, she’s in the hospital and recovering. Let’s hope for her case that it wasn’t bad. Getting assaulted is one thing, but by your loved one? You’ve outdone yourself this time, Mr Brown. Put him in jail.

If she still makes it, I must say that I feel obligated to attend her concert out of sheer respect for her workrate. But I seriously doubt that she’s coming.

I can’t be arsed to link from here, so go to Google and do a search on Chris Brown Rihanna altercation abuse. You’ll hit a gold mine of results.

Get well soon Rihanna and hope this is the end of you Chris.

It’s going to be tough to top John Legend and Incubus, but let’s see them try.

Update:

After the event launch, the organisers still can’t confirm on Coldplay or Prodigy.

N.E.R.D. are confirmed, with probably another headliner?

Take It All - S.U.P.A. feat. Melina

Posted in Music, Reco by weng Wednesday February 4, 2009

Super Unique Producers Around. Yep, that’s what S.U.P.A. stands for. Okay, it is a bit corny but I must say that I am quite impressed with their first release (i think). S.U.P.A. is made up of some key people from Purple Houz Publishing, which is a new setup focusing on post production work such as commercials, audio work, voice-overs, etc.

Melina is the established vocalist from Tempered Metal. Although I haven’t heard any of their stuff before, but her vocals are reminiscent of classic trance vocalists. When I first listened to Take It All, the first thing that came to my mind was a fusion between old school trance with a tinge of Zero 7. Melina’s vocals seem similar to Sia and even at times Sophie-esq.

Now, the video. The video is pretty interesting. The animation still has some way to go, but I must say that it is one of the best ones I’ve seen out of Malaysia for quite some time. I think it would be great if all of S.U.P.A.’s collaborations result in animation videos. Then, we’ll have a whole collection.
