Sunburst
Sunburst day didn’t really start very well for me. I decided to moser in at about 5pm to catch whoever was playing and start serious gigging with George Clinton onwards. Since I was a Bkt Kiara club member, I naturally assumed that I could park in the club and walk over. Apparently I couldn’t. Then it started raining and I didn’t quite like the fact that I had to park outside by the road. Pissed off, I went off to the St Patrick’s day party first to get a few pints of Guinness. After the rain stopped, I went back to Sunburst and discovered that the schedule was about one hour behind.
So I caught a bit of Meet Uncle Hussain. They were average and really not as good as they were hyped out to be.
Then, it was Reza Salleh, who I thoroughly enjoy Smoke City. Stayed for a few more songs and did some gig hopping.
Finally, The Roots came on. I was looking forward to them but I must say that I was a tad bit disappointed. They had a Tuba player, which was superb, but eventually, you couldn’t really hear him. Don’t really know if it was the sound system or he was just getting tired physically or from the heat. Overall, they looked aged. Some bopped and hung out for a few more songs and I went off to watch:
Wait for it..
Che’nelle. Or however you spell her name. One thing about this girl, she can sing pretty well. Malaysia boleh. Stayed for two songs from her album. It was not bad.
Next up, Incognito. I think I’ve seen them 3 times prior to this. They are still very good entertainers. Vocals are fantastic. Instruments are fantastic. So they were good.
John Legend. I had a sit down to watch his performance. With a name like legend, would you expect him to be any less cocky or self indulgent? Of course not, but he was pretty good. His piano playing was also pretty immaculate.
By the time John Legend finished, we were about 1 hour plus behind schedule, so I was supposed to watch Estranged and Search (*Horror*) before Incubus but the organisers pulled a surprise out for us. Incubus came on without being announced and they started on time based on the schedule. They were definitely the hightlight of the night, belting out hits like I Wish You Were Here, Nice to Know You, Echo, Talk Shows on Mute and tonnes more. They ended the night with Aqueous Transmission. Nice one, bruvver.
Overall, this was a pretty good effort at a music festival. A one dayer. But, perhaps more bands with longer gigs if the stages are put further apart to have 4 concurrent gigs at once? Good effort but thumbs down for Pineapple. They did a poor job for Kanye West and they did a mediocre job here. Sound system was the biggest issue. At some points, you couldn’t hear Brandon sing. Bah.
Obviously parking was a bitch. They always never think this through properly.
